SALESMAN'S LAPSE.
THEFT Aim FATLDTG TO accouht. PROBATION EXTENDED. "This young man got into bad habits, such as drinking and gambling, and finding himsalf in an impecunious position, he took the money," was what Mr. Brodie. as counsel for Thomas H. Greenwood (27). a motor car salesman, had to say at the Police Court this morning, when Greenwood admitted charges of fraudulently omitting to account for £7 7/9. and two charges of stealing £4 and 6/6.
Chief Detective Hammond stated that Greenwood had been employed on a. service car during the month of Jane when the offences had been committed. One of the passengers tendered him a £5 note in mistake for a £1 note, and Greenwood failed to return the £4, although when first questioned abont it, he admitted that he meant to refund it. The theft of 6/6 concerned a fare which he had not accounted for, while he had also failed to account for £7 7/9. Accused. who had never been in trouble previously, was a married man and wa» now employed as a car salesman in Wanganui. Counsel suggested that Greenwood's case was one for probation. The magistrate admitted accused to probation for twelve months, one of the conditions being that he should take oat i prohibition order and abstain from intoxicating liquor.
