GANG OF FORGERS
Many Frauds During Recent Years. LEADERS CAPTURED. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 12.30 p.m.) . BERLIN, August 21. The police claim to have broken up a dangerous and clever gang of international forgers, who, of recent years, have defrauded banks throughout the whole of Europe of hundreds of thousands of pounds. The discovery was due to the arrest of Luigi Milano, who attempted to obtain £1500 on a letter of credit from the Yokohama Specie Bank for £5800.
Luigi fled panic-stricken, owing to delay while the banker examined the letter, and left a false passport. A quartz lamp revealed that the letter was genuine but that the owner's name and the amount had been altered.
Two others have been arrested and the police have ascertained that the gang's headquarters were in Marseilles. They are now seeking five members of the same family, who are believed to Do involved. Italian police allege that Milano is concerned in frauds in Italy.
