MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board was held last night, Mr. E. F. Jones presiding. Fire Hydrants.—The engineer, Mr. «• Whitmore, reported that many of theplugs on the fire hydrants in the Winstone Park estate—3o or more—are ot ssuchdimensions that the standpipes used by the local fire brigade will not satisfactorily fit on to them, and this condition might have serious results in the event of a fire in the locality. The report was reierred to Mr. J. Dawson, C.E., who acteu on the board's behalf in the Winstone estate, who is to be asked to state why plugs of odd sizes had been used, and the cost of replacing them with plugs of standard size. , Fire Brigade.—lt was agreed to send a letter of appreciation to the Mount Koskill Fire Brigade for its prompt action in suppressing a fire in Lyntou Avenue on Friday last. Septic Tanks.—The engineer did not agree with the installation of septic tanks in clay areas, and on his recommendation thev are to be disallowed. . . Lines and Levels.—The Wesley Training College have agreed that, provided the board undertakes the whole of the drainage, for both sewer and stormwater purposes, of their property off Dominion Road, and makes the drain large enough for the future requirements of the Three Kings watershed, the college board of managers will undertake to complete the roading of the aforesaid area as per plan, submitted and approved by the board within twelve months of the completion of the drainage of this area, and to give the lines and levels of the roads wherever required. New Public Road. —The board decided to inform the Minister of Public Works that it cannot see its way clear to accede to his request to maintain that portion of the strip of land which he has caused to be legalised as a public road. Subdivision. —Mr. E. A. Pearce moved, and it was agreed, "That the resolution of the board, passed on February 21 last, whereby it was resolved that all plans of subdivisions be referred to the board's Town Planning Committee be rescinded. Building Permits. —Six permits for new buildings were issued during the fortnight of a total value 'of £4295. Finance Committee.—Mr. S. I. Goodall was appointed chairman of the Finance Committee in place of Mr. T. Davies, who | had_ resigned.
New Rainger.—Eleven applications were received for the position of district ranger. Mr. Albeit Hanson was appointed. Tenders. —The following tenders were received for laying storm water pipes in Mount Albert Road, viz., J. Hewitt, £<A 12/; Ballantyne and Son, £758 1/; J. Boyd, £742; J. Barrett. £708 7/6; A. F. La Franchi. £665 6/6; A Gosse, £650; G. L. Gordon, £593 9/; G. H. Clark, £592 7/8; Winter Brothers. £oi 5; McCarten Bros., £534 7/9; R. E. Eastman (accepted), £510 7/9. The engineer's estimate is £600.
NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Northcote Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. A. E. Greenslade) presided. Balance-Sheet.—The audited balancesheet for the year ended March 31, 1927, was received from the Auditor-General, and adopted. The Mayor pointed out that the document was free from any tag, on which the treasurer, Mr. H. W. Wilson, was to be complimented. Museum Levy.—lt was decided to allow the proposal to call a conference of the North Shore borough councils, to take concerted action in opposition to the compulsory levy clause in the Memorial Museum Maintenance Bill, to remain in abeyance. Destructor Legislation.—The draft of suggested legislation to facilitate financial arrangements in connection with the North Shore destructor was received, and referred to Mr. P. J. Ryan and the town clerk, with power to act. Local Summer Time.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr. P. .T. Ryan, it was decided, by a small majority, that while supporting summer time for the whole of New Zealand, the council did not favour the proposed legislation to confer local option for each separate district. Unemployment Relief.—A donation of £12, partly raised by social gatherings, was handed over to the council by the Northcote branch of the New Zealand Labour party, for the relief of local unemployment. The council accepted the contribution with grateful acknowledgment, commended the helpful spirit of the donors, decided to subsidise the sum by an equal amount, and make application for an unemployment subsidy.
