•Sir George Clifford has entered some of his team for the Wanganui meeting. They consist of Quarterdeck, Full Feather and Svvoopalong.

Starshell was just beginning to come back to form when he went amiss at Riccarton just before the Grand National meeting, and could not fulfil his engagements. He only needs to be at his best at Wanganui to have a chance in hurdle events there.

Automne, who is now trained by G. Henderson at Avondale, has been schooled over hurdles during the last few weeks, and has been shaping well. This gelding has a lot of pace, and has only got to jump properly to have a chance in minor hurdle events.

Comical is among those entered for hurdle events at the Wanganui meeting. The attention of this gelding has been confined to steeplechasing for a long time past, a department which he was not very successful in. He was handicapped for the most part in those events on his hurdling ability, and that was not in his favour. There is no doubt about his ability over the smaller obstacles, and if he is raced in this branch this season he should not bo long in capturing a stake. Comical is also engaged in fiat events at tho Wanganui meeting.

A very promising looking maiden at Avondale is a four-year-old gelding by Archiestown from The \Vhip, therefore a half brother to Star Comet, who showed good form last season. This gelding was very much in the rough when taken in hand by S. G. Lindsay, but ho is steadily building up. He is moulded on more solid lines than Star Comet, and though he has not done much work", he is just the sort that should quickly improve and develop into a useful horse.

Maori Boy, a five-year-old horse by Lucullus from Capable, is now being trained at Avondale by his owner, T. Davidson. He is carrying plenty of condition just at present, but if he comes on quickly he will be given a race at the Avondale meeting next month. This horse ran third to British King and Solanio in the Trial Stakes at the Whangarei meeting last March, but has not shown up since then, although rightly placed he may do better this season.

«T. Cathro, who is located at Avondale, has four horses in work at the present time. They include Mauriaena, Auriculus, Mussie, and Hiata, a three-year-old by Hyllus from Waiatapai, who started on three occasions last season in two-year-old events. Mauriaena and Auricu--Ins are both well forward, and yesterday morning were sent over six furlongs on the outside of the course proper at Avonflale. They ran the distance in 1.25, and there was little between them at the finish. This pair will be raced at the Marton and Wanganui meetings next month.

Although there has been a lot of rain recently, the newly-formed Avondale track has stood the test well, and trainers in that district arc unstinted in their praise of the facilities there for training. The outside of the course proper has been available twice a week for some time past, and has provided splendid going. Yesterday morning a number of horses wore galloped there, and despite the heavy rain overnight the track was very firm and showed little signs of cuttingup. As a result of the facilities granted, the horses trained art Avondale are all well forward, and several of them will bo racing at Marton and Wanganui next month.

S. Hodge is busy getting his team ready for early spring engagements. Several of them were out doing useful work at Avondale yesterday morning. Knvoy and Principal were given a run over three furlongs, and although not after time they moved nicely. Serang, N'assock, and Camp Prince were given a similar task, which they performed creditably. Camp Prince was going nicely on the inside of the two older horses. He is a three-year-old who has not yet raced, (nit lie has a very resolute style of galloping. Aggressive and Presumption were on term a at the end of a threefurlong sprint, but the former, who is rather"inclined to be a sluggish worker, appeared to be always going the better < I the pair.

W. Kirk has a five vear-old mare by fat mint from Roulade in work at Avondale. and though she was very low in condition when first taken in hand she is bcinning to, build up nicely. She was sprinted three furlongs on the outsido of the course proper yesterday morning nnd displayed some pace considering the short time she has been in work. " This trainer is alsp- giving AmI,ro.ia cri«y work and she will be racing later on in the season. A few seasons ...» W Kirk trained a number of good horses, iimoiig <lici» being Parisian Diamond. Statuette and Astenas, while |e also captured a large amount in f lake moiicv with Ruapapa, True Blood nnd Itovi.f Wood, and has had a long experience at the racing game in various part-s of the North Island.

Beau Cavalier returned to Ellerslie from Riccarton this morning.

Assume, a two-year-old filly by Autumn from Assured ia being allotted only very light tasks at Avondale. This youngster is rather on the small side, but nevertheless displays a lot of (Juality.

Adjuster, who was injured while being schooled at Ellerslie just prior to the Great Northern meeting, is now in solid work again at Avondale, This gelding will Be given a run over hurdles at the approaching Avondale spring fixture.

Curtain, a three-year-old by Thespian from Cowl, is those entered for the Wanganui meeting. This filly has not yet started, but she should be able to gallop all right, for she comes from a good family, Rational, Veil, The Monk, Farce, Lady Isinglass, and Mask all being from Cowl.

Partial Eclipse, who displayed some pace last season, has joined S. G. Liindsay's team at Avondale. She is looking nice and robust, and it should not be long before she again is in racing trim. She is a half sister to Awarere, who won the Railway Handicap at the last Auckland summer meeting.

Gold Cure performed well at the Trentham winter meeting, running fourth in the Trial Plate and capturing the Maiden Handicap, six furlongs, on the second day and the Crofton Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, on the concluding day. He has not raced since, but is among those nominated for the Marton and Wanganui spring meetings.

Quite a number of Auckland and Waikato horses are engaged at the Wanganui spring meeting. They include Upoko, Foreign Fancy, King Lu, Waltzer, Day Guard, Tea Time, Te Koroke, Sleepy Sol, Auriculus, Saucy Hose, Avoncourt, Segment, Queen Arch, Valkon, Taurimu, Mauriaena, Town Bird, and Ruffles.

6. Henderson has got a fair-sized team in work at Avondale. Among them is Automne, Adjuster, Grand Tea, Takarunga, Festina Lente, Eh Timi, Assume, and an Archiestown—Waiatarua five-year-old mare, therefore a half-sister to Corregidor, who among other races won the Te Awamutu Cup. Some of them are being got ready for the Avondale meeting next month.

Grand Tea, a three-year-old by Tea Tray from Luculia, has improved a good deal since being raced at the Avondale autumn meeting. He is an exceptionally well-grown colt, and in appearance there are few better looking Tea Trays. Although he is engaged in the Avondale Guineas, it is undecided yet whether he will contest that event, as he is to be given plenty of time to develop.

The Debutante Stakes at Wanganui is the first two-year-old event of the season and quite a good field has been nominated. The two-year-old parade on the first day may give some guide to the event; at least it did so last year for Knightlike, who won a division, was successful in the Stakes on the second day. However, he has failed to score since; his best performance being m running third in a five-furlong event at the Napier Park autumn meeting.

S. G. Lindsay baa not been doing very much with bis team at Avondale up to the present, but will begin to send them along from now on. He has Alonsoa, The Dansant, Partial Eclipse, Fancy Boy and four-year-old gelding by Archiestown from The Whip} to start off the new season with. This trainer won several races with Alonsoa last season, and as the Catmint mare has wintered well, she should again prove a payable proposition.

The Hawk and Goshawk have been entered for the Wanganui meeting. Both are reported to have wintered well. The Hawk showed last season that h-j could sprint well, for he beat Aussie at Trentham for the chief end of the stake in the Metropolitan Handicap, and later beat Reremoana in the Taranaki Stakes. In a dozen starts he was only out of the money on three occasions, winning twice, being second on five occasions and third twice. Goshawk was also consistent, winning a couple of events, being second three times and third once in nine starts. He won the Napier Cup, one mile and a-quarter, but his best performance was in winning the Summer Handicap at Trentham last January, when he beat a good field and run the distance in 1.38 3-4. Goshawk should be a good horse over a middle distance this season.

Beacon Light is engaged at the Wanganui meeting next month. Two seasons ago Beacon Light won the Higgie Handicap at this meeting, and, coming on to Ellerslie, annexed the Avondale Cup. His next appearance was at Wellington, where he got beaten in the Wellington Handicap, but on the second day he created a surprise by annexing the Champion Plate. Beacon Light was then in great demand for the New Zealand Cup, but he went amiss and was not started again during the ' season'. Last season he again made his first appearance at the Wanganui spring meeting, and unsuccessfully contested the Marangai and Higgie Handicap. He also failed in his two starts at Trentham, but at the Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting be finished second in the Metropolitan Handicap, one mile and a-half, to Te Monanui. He has not been raced since that fixture. It is a pity that this horse is not sound, for he would make his presence felt in many of the big handicaps if he could be properly wound up.

While Gothic has been advanced to a position of equal favourite with Hvnanna in the Caulfield Cup, Mr. Sol. Green, owner of the imported horse, says that he has not yet supported Gothic for the Cup. "I would sooner take the shorter price that will offer about Gothic when he has proved his ability to run out the twelve furlongs than accept the quotation now offering," said Mr. Green, "but you can take it from me that if he is able to see out the distance he will go very close to winning." Gothic will have his first race in the Memsie Stakes, a nine-fur-longs w.f.a. race. He will also figure as a runner in the Herbert Power Stakes, of a mile a..d three furlongs, and if he comes through this ordeal satisfactorily, then he can be depended upon to render a great account of himself in the Cup. Mr. Green's advice is to back Gothic provided backers are prepared to gamble on whether the importation will do sufficiently well in the meantime to justify the hopes that he will see out the twelve furlongs. Gothic, by the way, will 'be ridden by J. Pike. This, in iUelf, is .. big consideration.
