SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Tamnarunui Bridge Club held its final evening this season at Mrs. E. Edwards' residence oil Thursday. The prizes were won by Mrs. S. R. Dryland and Mr. G. K. Manson. The aggregate prizes for the season were won by Mrs. Melrose and Mr. Managh.

Recently Mrs. G. E. Manson, Taumarunui, entertained a laige number of guests at a bridge evening at her residence, in aid of the Anglican Church funds. The drawing room was tastefully decorated with spring bulbs and greenery. The winner of the bridge prize was Mrs. J. O'Brien.

Tlicre was a large attendance at the Anglican Patronal Festival in the Parish Hall, Taumarunui. An entertaining musical programme was provided, to which the following contributed items: Miss Franks, Mr. Woodcock, Mr. Franks, and Mrs. Kerr. A competition was won by Mr. Ilibberd.

Te Rahu Tennis Club's dance, held on Thursday in Lake View Hall, was a distinct success. The hall and supper tables were effectively decorated in the club's colours, red and black, while the many tennis racquets helped with the decorations. Dalton's Orchestra dispensed excellent music, and extras were played by Misse3 Calder, Bowler and Jary.

A charming little gathering took place in the Tudor Tearooms on Saturday morning, when Mrs. H. E. Partridge gave a farewell tea for Mrs. and Miss Boyle, who leave shortly on a holiday trip to America. Amongst those present were:—Lady Lockhart, Mrs. Bayle, Mrs. Napier, Mrs. Stride, Mrs. Geoffrey Webb, Mrs. Hay man, Miss Boyle and Miss Gee.

A very pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mrs. Elliott, Mangere Road, Otahuhu, on Friday evening last, when a surprise party took place. The evening was organised by Miss Emily Moffat, who acted as hostess. Dancing was indulged in, interspersed with musical items. Those contributing were Mrs, F. Fearnley, "Sympathy," Miss E. Moffat, "Juenesse," Miss E. Moffat and M. Seel, piano solos, and Mr. A. Elliott. The ladies provided a dainty supper. Miss Moffat received the guests dressed in black satin; Mrs. Elliott, pink beaded dress; Mrs. Fearnley, blue fanille; Mrs. Knott, black beaded georgette; Mrs. Hickson, flame em'bossed velvet; Miss Barben, coral crepe on dulouse; Miss Geary, beaded georgette; Miss Seel, green crepe de chine; Miss Tunell, figured alzona; Mrs. Moore, black velvet.

On Friday evening Mrs. G. L. Cole gave a delightful party at her residence, Matai Road, to bid farewell to Miss Ifewman and Misa Baigent, both of Nelson. A decorative scheme of blue and gold was adopted in the ballroom, while the lounge was gay with spring flowers. Ranunculus and anemones imparted a gay and colourful appearance to the supper room. The hostess received lier guests in a charming frock of figured charmeuse; Miss Newman's frock was of lilac floral taffeta and tulle; Miss Baigent, black velvet and diamante trimming; Mrs. M. Tisdall, powder blue georgette; Miss Alan Jones, jade georgette and crystal; Mrs. Rich White, silver tissue, multi-coloured posies; Mrs. Fairey, eky blue taffeta; Mrs. T. Cole, black ring velvet; Mrs. Fragear, sunset embossed georgette; Mrs. Anthony Stubbs, black tulle, touches of cyclamen; Mrs. A. O. Glassie, cream chenille georgette.

At the conclusion of the regular meeting of the board of directors of the Y.W.C.A., Mrs. G. H. Wilson referred to the fact that it was the last meeting of the year. At the next meeting there would be a new president and several new board members would be added to their numbers. She thanked the board for their loyalty and support during the few months she had been acting-presi-dent, and spoke most appreciatively of the services of Mrs. C. W. Garrard, who had been unable to complete her term as president. Mrs. J. C. Dickinson referred with regret to the resignations of Miss Ivy Perry and Miss Irene Watts, and assured them of a warm welcome when they were in a position again to serve on the board. Mrs. T. Clark also spoke in the same strain. Mrs. Todd Smith was granted a year's leave of absence. Much appreciation of the long years of service to the association by Mrs. Todd Smith was expressed by members of the board.

The monthly meeting of the Victoria League Girls' Committee was held last week, when Mrs. L. S. Rickerby presided over a good attendance of members. Reference was made to the excellent work done by the girls. They did not realise the great influence they had, and the Victoria League had every reason to be proud of the work. They were working for the Empire. Reports were then read by the conveners of the various circles: The Hospital Circle reported that the hospital is visited weekly and the girls distribute sweets and fruit to the children. The Entertainment Circle stated that a concert was given and was very much appreciated by the inmates of the Infirmary. A bridge party is given monthly at the Evelyn Firth Home by the Bridge Circle, and is much enjoyed by all. The Sewing Circle is working hard and to date 140 articles have been given to the Rev. Jasper Calder. A bridge party given by Mrs. Friedlander to augment the sewing funds raised over £10. Arrangements were made towards collecting sweets for the stall on Daffodil Day and it was decided to hold a party in the league rooms to gather in the sweets.

A delightful dinner party was held at the Grand Hotel on Saturday evening by Mrs. Harrison-Gregory. The occa" fiion vva« in honour of the twenty-first birthday of her daughter Violet, and alto as a farewell party to Mr. HarrisonGregory, who sailed by the Niagara today. Ihe table was charmingly decorated with bowls of violets. Mrs. Gregory wore a gown of black ring velvet, with wrap of black velvet shot with gold Miss Gregory was in a frock of silver lame, with a large posy of violets on one <-;houlder. Among the guests were: Mrs. P. B. White, Mrs. H. Mowbray, Miss \ aile, Miss Meg Russell, Miss V. Ziman, Mies Hooker and Miss Maida Hooker.

A novel method of celebrating a twenty-first birthday was taken by Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Hand, of Hill Road, Manurewa, on the occasion of their only son, Frederick, attaining his majority on Friday last. The local theatre was occupied by some 500 guests, who were given a delightful programme on the screen, followed by a popular dance. A dainty supper was partaken of by about 100 couples, the children receiving an additional treat in the distribution of bags of sweets. Excellent music for the dancing was provided by Miss C. Shaw and Mr. Alex Donaldson. Mrs. F. C. Hand wore a frock of ambershaded georgette with applique trimmings and Egyptian shawl to tone. Amongst others present were: Mrs. A.
