FOOD ADULTERATION.

The subject of adulteration in food was again placed before the National Council of Women last evening by Mrs. Ruby Watson, who said she had got into touch with several medical men and they were strongly adverse to preservative's in food at all.

One doctor said that his cases of dyspepsia and gastric troubles had during the past few years increased quite fourfold, and he attributed it in great measure to the use of preservatives in food. In Australia one magistrate said the community would go on suffering all the ills under the sun as long as it continued to tolerate the use of preservatives in food. He firmly agreed with the recommendation of a special commission which had investigated the matter in England and had reported that preservatives should not be allowed in food at all.

Mrs. Watson said she had a copy of the Food and Drugs Act of 1908, with amendments, and it seemed to cover the ground and provide for complete protection from fraud and deception. The trouble did not seem to be with the Act, but with the administration, and the speaker read various extracts from the Act. -which showed that under this Act would' come fish not properly smoked, dusting meat with preservatives, washing and meat with solution of formalin. This Was a subject of vital interest to the housewives, who should make their felt in the matter.
