SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Bridge continues to be very popular in Taumai umii. During last week Mrs. P. W. Rearclon entertained a number of guests at an enjoyable bridge evening, and Mrs. J. H. Lynskey was the winner of the prize. Mrs. S. R. Dryland was the hostess at another bridge party when the prizes were won bv Mrs. P. W. Reardon and Mrs. J. O'Brien.

A delightful tea was served at John Court's tearooms yesterday, the table and floral decorations being a scheme of mauve and gold. Larpc crystal stands held masses of violets and irises. The hostess, Mrs. F. Hobday, of Epsom, wore wine jersey velour suit with stone marten furs. Among the guests were Miss Elsie Prince, Mrs. S. Meyer (Melbourne), Mrs. G. Walker, Mrs. Irwin, Miss N. Deane, and Miss Webster.

The Greenhithe Women's Institute held their monthly meeting on Thursday when business included elections of delegates for the general meeting of the federation and nomination of officers for the executive committee. Acting on a suggestion from an English visitor, tne institute decided to collect the earliest possible data connected with the history of the district. A short address on the life of Dickens introduced several readings from this popalar autnor, in which many of the members took part. Afternoon tea concluded tho meeting.

A largely attended meeting of tlie Auckland French Club was held in the club rooms last evening. The members were received by Mrs. G. S. Coldham, wearing a frock of black georgette trimmed with Oriental embroidery. The following programme, arranged by Mr. S. Coldham, assisted by scholars of the Mount Albert Grammar School, was presented: —Songs by Miss Thelina Duflin and Mr. Fryer-Raisher; clarinet solo by L. Floyd. « • • • The pavilion of the Carlton Bowling Club, Fairfax lioad, Fpsom, was the scene of a large gathering of the members of tho Carlton Croquet Club, and their friends, on Thursday evening last, when a bridge and .">OO parly was tendered to the club by M/s. K. it. Cucksey. The president of the club (.Mrs. Hamilton), together with the secretary and treasurer and members of the committee, ably seconded the efforts of the hostess in making the evening both a social and financial success. The enjoyment of the players was most apparent, and the president took occasion to express the thanks of the club to Mrs. Cuckser for her generosity in providing the entertainment in order to assist the club's finances. The hostess took infinite trouble in respect to the decorations and the providing of an excellent supper. Various prizes were won by Mr. and Mrs. Preston. Mrs. Comes, Mr. James, ami Mr. Prust Stewart.

The Penrith reception room was gaily decorated last evening for the twentyfirst birlhd.iy party of Mr. Voile Home only son of Mr. ami Mrs. Albert E Home, of Parnell. In the Parish IT all at Papakura on Saturday evening the Papakura Girls' Hockey Club held a very successful dance. The hall was tastefully decorated in the club's colours, red and white, in the form of a spider's web. A jazzing competition was won by Miss L. Grant and Mr. R. Richardson. Other novelty dances were held. The music was supplied by Miss L. Grant, extras being played by Miss M. Francis and Miss M. Andrew. A dainty supper was provided by the club. A most successful open evening was held by the members of the Bridge Circle of the' Lyceum Club, last evening. The folding doors of the lounge were flung open and even the stage was used to accommodate the large number of players. Masses of greenery and pot plants, interspersed with bowls of spring flowers, made artistic decoration. Mrs. S. T. Wickstead, convenor of the circle, wore a frock of black embossed georgette, and Miss C. Murray, secretary, was in black velvet beaded in silver. Mrs. W. H. Parkes wore black and old gold lace.
