EXECUTIONS QUASHED.
AUSTRALIAN SENTENCES. MELBOURNE, July 20. The sentence of deatl that was passed on George Gordon for the murder of Richard and Catherine Clements on February 1(5, has been commuted to imprisonment for life.
A i :i',c from S'-iliu'v states that tho death sentence passed on Charles Edward Bradney, for the murder of Clara Dukes, has been commuted to penal servitude for life. The woman was found dead in a house at Glebe, on April 27, and Bradney was discovered lying on the doorstep with a serious wound in his throat. —
George Gordon, aged 30,' was convicted and sentenced to death on May 10 for the murder of an elderly couple. Richard and Catherine Clements, storekeepers, near Bairnsdale, on February 16. They were murdered at night. Gordon had been living in the neighbourhood. His clothes w ere stained with blood and his fingerprints were found on a chest of drawers.
