AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS
TEST PIECES CHOSEN. Owing to difficulties in arranging for halls, the Auckland Competitions Society's syllabus for the 1928 festival has been late in appearing. However, arrangements have now been made for the festival to commence at the end of August and to finish in the second week of September. The complete syllabus will be in print during the coming week, but the following test pieces have already been chosen in the musical section:— Church Choirs.—2s-40 voices: (a) Chorus, "The Heavens are Telling"; (b) hymn unaccompanied, "At Even When the Sun Was Set" (Joseph). Under 25 voices: (a) Anthem, "The Radiant Morn" (Woodward); (b) hymn unaccompanied, "Lead Kindly Light" (Dykes). Piano Section.—Under 10, "Song of the Spinning Wheel" (Harris); 10 and under 12, "Intro and Fugato," D Minor (Harris); 12 and under 14, "Minuetto" from Sonata 7, Op. 10, No. 3 (Beethoven); 14 and under 16, (a) "Cappriccio" (Scarlatti), (b) own selection; 16 and under 19, "Scherzo and Allegro Assai," Sonata Op. 2, No. 3 (Beethoven); over 18 (restricted class), "Nocturne E Major," Op. 62, No. 2 (Chopin); champion piano solo, "Erl King" (Schubert-Liszt) and sightreading test. Piano duets under 16 and open are own selection. Violin Section. —Under 14, "Le Cygne" (Saint-Saens); 14 and under 18, "Salterelle' (Edward German); open, "On Wings of Song" (Mendelssohn), Achron arrangement. rho test pieces for the vocal classes, ■n ii Ulc e ' n £ finally chosen to-dav, win all be numbers which are in stock at tiie local music stores.
