IMPROPER PUBLICATION.
A NEWSPAPER REBUKED.
"MIGHT INFLUENCE BENCH." WARNING BY MAGISTRATE. (By Telegraph—Own correspondent.) CHRTSTCHURCH, this day. Before imposing sentences on four shunters to-day, Mr. E. D. Mosley. S.M., made it clcar that he took strong exception to an article trat appeared in a newspaper 011 Wednesday. A protest against the offending publication was made by Mr. Twyneham, counsel for one of the convicted men. He said it had been published tinder "scare" headlines and made direct reference to the cases now before the Court. It seemed that the only object of some newspapers was to sell papers irrespective of the courts of justice or the rights of individuals.
The Magistrate said: "Fortunately T had determined on the sentences before I saw the article. When I saw the headlines I deliberated for some minutes as to whether it was wise for me to read it, but as my mind was already made up I read it. It is exceedingly objectionable, and it is not right, and the sooner the attention of the papers is drawn to that the better for the papers and the public. Papers have no right to publish anything that might influence the bench."
