CRICKET.
COX OF SUSSEX.
TO COME TO AUCKLAND
Auckland will be the summer home of three Sussex county cricketers next season, for word has been received from E. H. Bowley, that he has selected as coach for the Auckland Suburban Cricket Association, a club mate, G. R. Cox. Consequently, when Bowley and Langridge. who have been re-engaged by the Auckland Cricket Association, come back here, they will be accompanied by Cox, who will pioneer as a coach for the Suburban Association. Bowlev was authorised by the Auckland Suburban Cricket Association to select a coach, who, in his opinion, would best suit the requirements of the. association, and yesterday Mr. E. Stallworthy (association secretary), received advice that Cox had been selected.
G. R. Cox, now in his 55th year, has been a member of the Sussex County team for twenty-six years, and for twenty years of that time has been one of the best all-rounders of the team. A hundred wickets a year was a regular thing with him and from 1906 onwards he has added to this his thousand runs very frequently. Proof that he is still an effective player is supplied by his scores of 35 and 15, not out, against the New Zealand team in England in 1927, when he also took two wickets (Dacre and Merritt), for 106 runs. His batting average for the county last year was 11.7, and he took 33 wickets on an average of 33.4. His long experience should make hiin ©specially valuable as a coach.
