ADVERTISING.
AUCKLAND CLUB'S PROGRESS.
ART AND COMMERCE.
A SUCCESSFUL REUNION.
The concert chamber in the new Lewis Eady building was an appropriate venue last evening for the annual meeting of the Auckland Advertising Club, and for a happy reunion of its members. The choice was singularly appropriate, for no hall in the city could typify more that blend of art and progress which is typified by the club's activities.
Those responsible for the decoration of the hall must be congratulated. The classic severity of its lines was in no way marred by imposition of the best of modern posters. There one saw Sir William Orpen's "Night Mail" (a picture of a fireman shovelling coal into the boiler-fire ot the famous "Flying Scotsman," and a poem in industry if ever there was one), alongside one or two of Fred Taylor's unforgettable cathedral studies, which surely deserved a higher niche in the gallery of posterity than to be mere advertisements for a railway company. The blend of art and progress was carried still further by two of McKnight Kaufief's posters for the publicity of tropical Africa, a futuristic studyj entitled "Cocoa," and a strikingly effective design bearing the title, "Jungles To-day are Gold Mines To-morrow."
All these material things were reminiscent of the advertising exhibition held recently at the Town Hall.
Proposing the toast of "Exhibitors and Visitors," Mr. C. E. Clinkard said the support accorded to the first exhibition, two years ago, was encouraging, but the success of the latest effort had surpassed all expectations. Similar sentiments were expressed by Mr. L. A. Eady, last year's president,* who took the chair at the annual meeting. He said constructive service had played a prominent part in the work of the club. The booklet committee had carried out excellent work, and the publication of a comprelieisive work was now practically assured. The Ci'y Council had agreed to contribute £f»00 toward its cost, the Auckland Power Board £250 and the Chamber of Commerce £25. In addition, the Manufacturers' Association had been sympathetic in its considers tion of the scheme.
Tribute was paid by Mr. Eadv (and also by the new president, Mr.* A. H. Lees) to the value of the educational claßse* held during the year, and thanks were given to the secretary (the Rev A. M. Ni block) to Mr. Clinkard and to Mr. Goodwin and Mr. Barker in this connection. A satisfactory balancesheet showed a bank credit of £198 compared with £121 last year).
A Veteran'* Victory.
[ The Clinkard Cup, which is held each (year by the member who has shown the greatest enthusiasm and done the most effective work on the club's behalf was handed by Mr. Lees to Mr. John Clark, a veteran member, who was accorded a warm and spontaneous meed of applause. Mr. Clark made a characteristically modest reply to the toast of nis health, and declared that the main credit for the Hub's progress was due to the work of the fraternal committee. over which he presides. Mr. Eady was presented with an album, winch is a pictorial, written and pnnted record of the Advertising Exhibition. and he was also accorded a vote of thanks for his services to the club during the year. The following officers were elected: — President. .Mr. A. H. C. Lees; vicenresident Mr. G. C. Codlin; executive. Messrs. \VH. V Taine, John Clark, F. F. Levy, VV. J. Pateoe. F. W. Petterd; secretary, the Rev. A. M. Ni block; treasurer. Mr. George Finn; auditor, Mr G • rev Campbell. The toast of "Local Bodies" was coupled with the name of Mr. Tom Blood worth, who made a n appropriate and witty response, and other toasts I were honoured the speakers including v- u, J ; A - C Am,in ' th « Rev. A. M Aibloek and Professor Maxwell Walker. I here was also an excellent musical programme.
