But Trouble With Men Is Expected.

The shipowners yesterday received a telegram from the Cooks' Union and the strike has been officially declared off.

A large number of marine cooks is offering for re-employment. It is under stood that non-union volunteers will be compensated by the companies upon returning to home ports, and then discharged, thus avoiding further friction.

Upon the arrival of the Mildura. m u.. Ned by volunteers, at Brisbane, about 300 watcrsidcrs declined to unload lie: The company intends to seek volunteei wharf workers.

Although the cooks' strike has been declared otf, trouble in regard to the manning of ships by members of the Seamen's Union is now threatened. The Victorian branch of the union was advised from Sydney to man all ships except those on which non-union labou* is engaged. This will be acted upon and the onus will be placed on the owners of refusing to engage seamen tor other vessels.

Affidavits put in by the applicant stated that if the members of the union were consulted an overwhelming majority of them would be in favour of accepting employment. The applicant was satisfied that the refusal of the members of the union to return to employment was caused by fear of their execut > . Chief Judge Dethridge granted the rule nisi applied for, and made it returnable on Wednesday.
