Pilot Badly Injured In Crash. CAPT. FOLLETT WINS EVENT. MELBOURNE, May 27. The Melbourne Aerial Derby was won by Captain Follett in a de Havilland oU. Time, 23m 4 2-ss. Captain Matthews was second and J. Stewart, in a Moth 'plane, was third. One competitor, Flight-Lieutenant A. G. Wells, who was in an Air Force de Havilland 9 machine, struck a hightension electric cable, which tore olf both the wings and then fused with a blinding flash.
The machine crashed. Lieutenant Wells was badly injured, and may lose his eyesight. His forehead was crushed and his condition is critical. AMERICA TO AUSTRALIA. SMITH TO START THURSDAY. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) NEW YORK, May 27. A message from Oakland, California, says Captain Kingsford Smith has arrived there in his 'plane the Southern Cross after a pleasant but uneventful trip from Los Angeles.
Captain Smith and his three associates intend to leave Oakland for Honolulu next Thursday, if the weather is favourable on their flight to Australia.
