GREAT EXPLOSION.
BLASTING AT CEMENT WORKS CHARGE OF NINETEEN TONS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, this day. Nineteen tons of explosives was fired in the quarry of Wilsons Portland Cement Company on Saturday afternoon. It is estimated that 200,000 tons of rock was brought down.
The work of drilling 21 holes which ran down from 160 ft to 224 ft occupied five months, and men had been engaged since last Tuesday in loading the holes. The work was difficult and unpleasant, owing to the wild weather, and canvas shelters had to be provided to enable the workers to keep their feet.
