NORTH AUCKLAND ROADS.
DAIRYMEN DISSATISFIED. TOO LITTLE MONEY SPENT. Dissatisfaction with the neglected state of back-block roads in the North Auckland district was expressed by several speakers at the annual North Auckland Dairy Conference to-day. Mr. Lewis (Northern Wairoa) moved "that this conference is not satisfied with the evasive answers from the Minister and other officials, and urges a more vigorous loading policy."' Mr. Tremayne seconded. It was explained that the conferencc last year had forwarded a remit to the National Dairy Association conference urging a more vigorous roading policy, but it had been turned down.
Mr. McDonald (Hikurangi) said the by-ways, over which most of the cream was carried to the factories, were being starved in favour of the main highways.
Mr. Elliott (Hikurangi) who agreed with a good deal that had been said by some who supported the resolution, said he was not altogether in accord with the statement that the secondary roads were being starved. In Whangarei there was a system in operation under which the Main Highways Board contributed fourfifths of the cost of the main highways. He thought it was good business to have the main roads put into an efficient state. For a year or two, perhaps, the side roads might not have much spent on them, but their turn would come later.
Mr. Hay ward did not think the conference should express itself on this matter.
Other speakers urged that it was of first-class importance to the industry. The chairman, Mi'. A. Morton, said the word "evasive" did not look very well. He thought the resolution should be worded "That this conference is not satisfied with the replies received, and that it urges upon the Minister the very great importance of roading to the North Auckland district."
The resolution, as amended, was carried.
