NEW PLAYING AREA.
OPENED AT MOUNT ALBERT,
HON. GEO. FOWLDS OFFICIATES,
"Slums and juvenile crime are one and the same thing." said the Hon. Ge N Fowlds this afternoon, in stressing the value of open spaces in a city, when i>crforming the official opening ceremony at the children's playing area at the Morningside Reserve. It was just twenty years since the reserve was purchased, and, though it gave him pleasure to open this new section, Fowlds hoped that it would not be another -twenty years before it was fully developed for the benefit of the district.
Although it used to be thought that Auckland was well off for parks and playing areas, it was realised to-day that such was not the case, continued Mr. Fowlds. Open spaces and good citizenship went hand in hand.
The opening of the playing area marks the first step in a programme of improvements to parks in the borough contemplated by. the Mount Albert Council. Fitted with up-to-date playing apparatus, the reserve, which is centrally situated, will, it is anticipated, prove one of the most popular recreational centres for the young. The devices will be added to from time to time.
Displays Vere given this afternoon's ceremony by the Edendale troop of Boy Scouts, and the Gladstone Girl Guides. Selections were played by the Ponsonby Boys' Brass Band." The ladies of the Aroha Guild had charge of the entertainments.
