NOTES FROM THE WAIKATO.
HORSES FOR AUCKLAND MEETING. The stables in this district will be w ell represented at the Auckland meeting with candidates for flat, steeplechase, and hurdle racing. There is little fault to find with the condition of Queen Arch. The Marble Arch mare, who revels in the track conditions obtaining just now, is not a forlorn hope in the Cornwall, but she requires 'vigorous riding all the way. Glenstar, who is among the hurdlers being prepared at Te Aroha, has been doing good work and gives promise of making an early return at the game. Those who have watched Waltzer in his schooling work over the hurdles at Te Aroha have been impressed with the displays by the Hymettus gelding. He gives the impression that he will be an early winner at the game. Waltzer will be at Ellerslie and whether it is flat or jumping duty that is set down for him at the coming meeting he is likely to come in for support, as he is a great goer in bad ground.
Pouri is to form one of the team the Te Rapa trainer J. F. Tutchen will be taking to Ellerslie. Although the Spalpeen gelding failed at Wanganui, it has to be allowed that these were liis first outings .since the New Year, and he looks a much improved horse as a result of his recent efforts. There will be several better supported horses than Pouri in the Great Northern Hurdles, but such a sure jumper and reasonable stayer has to be given consideration.
Mervette has been getting through her track work at Te Rapa in a way that indicates she will line up in nice order for racing -at Auckland next week-end. The LuculTus filly has filled out to some extent of recent months, and with her trainer (A. Tinker) to pilot her in the Cornwall Handicap she will have every opportunity to give a good account of herself.
When Te Kara finished third at a mile on the concluding day of the Waikato Club's autumn meeting, the son of General Latour and March was having his first race for several months. He has been given solid work on the tracks in the interval, and: has improved to a marked extent in his condition as the outcome. Te Kara promises to run a good race in the Cornwall Handicap. The heavier the ground the better will he be suited bv it.
One of the mudlarks from this district who will be seen in action at Ellerslie is Ivinglield. The King Lupin sprinter registered a victory in very hollow fashion at the autumn meeting at Te Rapa. Prior to that, except for a win at Te Aroha. his form was anything but attractive. As he is back at his best once again, and relishes a holding track, Kingtield is not likely to be overlooked at his next appearance.
Peter Maxwell, who broke down on the second day of the Wanganui meeting. while competing over country, was brought back to the Te Rapa stables of his trainer. .T. F. Tutchen. The damage to his leg is of the extensive order, the limb being very much enlarged. Although it may lie possible to get the Marble Arch gelding to stand another preparation it •is quite certain that it will be a long time before this cau be placed under way. In the Limelight. Wedding M a, eh has been doing well in the work he has been getting at Cambridge. and he will strip a very lit horse at the Great Northern meeting. The fact that lie lias a good increase in weight over the impost the Quia Abbey gelding carried to victoiy in the Great Northern Hurdles ia>t sea.-on is not going to deter Wedding March from having a big following next Saturday, and. barring accidents. Mr. 15. Hanuon's jumper can be relied upon to take a prominent part in the finish.
Lady Spalpeen will undertake her Auckland jumping duty well conditioned for the fray. 'I'he 1 Spalpeen mare has had plenty of schooling at Te Aroha of recent times, and although her fencin:.' is erratic at times she has prospects in the minor company.
The Te Rapa trainer R. Syme has been giving Wiltshire sufficient work to muscle him tip for his important jumping engagements at Ellerslie. The Day Comet chestnut has come on quickly as a steeplechaser of recent months and a double success already to his credit over
"the hill* will cause his followers to view his prospects on Monday week with some degree of confidence, it is certain that W iltsliire will be near the front during the journey, but his fencing is not free from fault, and with the pace right on this might bring about his undoing.
King Lu. who will be at the Auckland meeting, has not been racing since the New >\ear. Although he has plenty of weight in his coming engagement, the Lueullus representative has a lot of pace, and is a ra r e type of mover in soft going. He has done a useful measure of track work during the past couple of months, but King Lu may require a serious gallop to properly wind him tip.
j.o K©reiki? has been getting throuiili his work at Te Amha in pleasing .-t\ !e. and is going to come into some favour. in his Auckland engagements. Ti c well- ! bred descendant of Humbug and Tiuritiva | has been racing in improved fashion o\or j the latter halt" of the season, and while I he may bothered by the distance there [ is reason to believe that he will not lack support from the right quarter for the i Cornwall Handicap.
