BIRKENHEAD ORPHANS.

The 1928 session of the Birkenhead and Nortbcote Orphans' Club was opened on Saturday evening in the Masonic Hall, Northcote. The official visitors were welcomed by the president, Mr. J. W. Lethbridge, who also read numerous messages of greetings from kindred clubs. Mr. J. Osburne-Lilly, in a very entertaining style, replied for the Auckland Savage Club, and on behalf of the other guests. The selections "Kenilworth" and "Hortensia," by the-club's orchestra (under the conductorship of Mr. W. E. Webb), were excellently interpreted, and demonstrated the splendid asset the club possessed in this efficient instrumental combination. The other items were also greatly enjoyed, including songs by Messrs. Rutlcdge, T. Moffatt, and Strange, humour by Messrs. £. Powell, J. Sharpe, and Rex Yates, and instrumental selections by Messrs. G. fcjirigiJh 3» RufVOD, nd Swinburne.
