FORGED AN ORDER.
TO GET A SUIT.
OUNG MAN'S FALSE PRETENCE.
How a young man named William Carter obtained a new suit of clothes worth £7 7/, when all that he had was £1, was explained at the Police Court thin morning, when Carter was charged with obtaining the suit from a city tailoring establishment, with intent to defraud and by means of a false pretence.
Chief Detective Hammond said that accused, who was connected with the theatrical business, presented an order, purporting to be signed by a picture theatre operator, whom he knew, guaranteeing the full price of the suit. The operator knew nothing of this and the order was a forgery. Carter had never been in trouble before.
Mr: Thomas, who represented accused, stated that Carter obtained employment at Luna Park. The suit he was wearing was practically in rags, and he was compelled to secure a new suit in order to commence work. Bern" a stranger in the town he could not obtain anyone who would gue inn tee that the suit, would be paid for. Knowing the operator slightly, he foolishly signed his name to the order and obtained the suit after paving £1 as deposit. Since then he had paid another £1 10/ off the suit. Subsequently accused was discharged from Luna Park and he left on a country circuit with an entertainment company. Before leaving Auckland he told the tailors where he was going to and promised to send the balance of the money when be bad been paid. Counsel submitted that there was no intention on Carter's part to defraud the firm. However, since his arrest he had been eight days in prison pn remand, and the company had not, been able to show at the countrv towns..
