CANADA EXPLAINS.
EGYPTIAN TREATY REJECTION. (Received 1.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, March 29. There is no comment here regarding the Premier's, Mr. Mackenzie King, attitude towards the treaty between Britain and Egypt. Speaking in the House of the Premier said that -within the last few months the Government was asked with regard to the treaty being negotiated whether Canada would become a party to the terms of the treaty. This involved military sanctions and contemplated military alliances.
The Government, replied that they did not believe the Parliament of Canada would approve of such a. treaty, but that if Britain and Egypt could work out a treaty along the lines proposed, well and good, though as far as Canada was concerned they did not feel it was in the interests of the British Empire, or of the larger peace which it was hoped the treaty would serve that Canada should be asked to become a party to it.
The British Government immediately accepted our view in this regard. No suggestion was made in Canada that the Premier's announcement was premature.
