CHURCH'S COLLAPSE. Villagers' Vain Prayers To Escape Disaster. EARTHQUAKE CATASTROPHE. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright > ROME, March 29.
An investigation of the earthquake in the Carnic Alps area in North Italy, near the Austrian boundary, shows that it was more serious than was anticipated.
Twenty-five persons were killed in Cannia by falling masonry and many others were seriously injured.
A church collapsed at Verzegnis just after a thousand people had left. They had been attending a service of prayer that the earthquake should spare the village. They were hardly out of the building when it collapsed and the officiating priest was crushed to death.
Verzegnis was practically destroyed as nearly all the houses collapsed. Five dead txxlies, so far, have been taken from the ruins.
A terrible panic occurred at Tolmezzo, where great masses of earth fell from the mountains, increasing the destruction. •
Troops are actively searching for dead and imprisoned in the damaged area. They are also demolishing buildings which show signs of collapsing.
Anxiety is felt for the isolated villages in the higher parts of the Carnic Alps, no news of which has been received since Tuesday.
