HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES.
NO. 3 HIGHWAYS DISTRICT. ALLOCATED BY CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, this day. A considerable portion of the time of the annual conference of delegates representing local bodies in No. 3 Highways District with respect to the allocation of heavy traffic fees was taken up by delegates from Tauranga county and borough, who had reachcd no finality as to the allocation of heavy traffic fees in their district. Mr. Dive said he would like the Mayors of Whakatane and Rotorua and the chairmen of the Whakatane and Opotiki Counties to adjudicate on the matter. A further adjournment was made, during which a committee discussed the problem. When the conference resumed, the committee was stated to be of the opinion that the apportionment should be as follows: —Tauranga County, 55 per cent; Tauranga Borough, 25 per cent; Te Puke Town Board, 20 per cent. This recommendation was adopted by the conference. The following resolutions were carried unanimously:—"That the distribution of heavy traffic license fees be the same as last year"; "that comprehensive plying for ' hire licenses be continued within this main highway district"; "that each local body in the district be recommended to protest against the proposal contained in a letter from the engineer-in-chief and the Under-Secretary for the Public Works Department that licenses for motor lorries expire on May 31, instead of March 31, as at present.
