PACKED UNFAIRLY.
SACKS OF POTATOES. GARDENER FINED £10. WARNING GIVEN OTHERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day,
•Failure to pack sacks of potatoes in such a way as to give a fair idea of the size, maturity and condition of the potatoes alleged, cost Sun Hing Lee, £10 to-day.
Sun is a market gardener at Oliau. A fruit inspector said Sun had received a warning notice after a previous offence. The inspector said the effect of the fining of another offender recently was quickly seen on the Wellington market in the general improvement in the packing of vegetables.
The Chinese, said the inspector, were not the only offenders, and several warning notices had been sent to European market gardeners.
Counsel for defendant said the actual packing was carried out by Maoris, under the supervision of another Chinese.
