ACCIDENT ON WHARF.

CLAIM fob damages* SAFETY OF CHUTES DISPUTED.

«H I were asked to design chutes for use in the goods shed on the wharl I would not make anything different from the -chutes I have seen there," Mid IX. B. Patterson, .architect, evidence in the Supreme Court in case in which two wharf labourers, Frederick Hoy and Robert Lee . Bennett (Mr. o*Regan and Mr. Sullivan) are claiming-£soo each damages from the Harbour Board (Mr. McVeagh). \ r The claims arose out'of an accident on Prince's wharf on March .21, 1927, when both men were- struck and injured by a heavybale which fell over the edge of a chute. The allegation of the. plaintiffs is that the chutes were dangerous' and unsafe, owing to the sides being too low. The Harbour Board's engineer (Mr. D. Holderness) said the chute had been designed under his supervision and to his direction. It was a general utility chute. He subipitted plans to show that similar equipment was used in some of the great ports of the world. The case is in itp third day of hearing, and is expected to occupy the attention of Mr. Justice Blair and a jury of twelve throughout thaday.
