The Opotfl* » Borougii Council last night consideo ed the question of flood prevention.
Mr. J. Thorn pson waited on the council and suggest ed that it get the engineer to ascertain th e cost of stop banks. He considered that the majority of the Opotiki people would vote for flood prevention. Th< ; petition whidh he had previously pre -sented asked for protection from 1 >oth the rivers. He has the opinion tl Kit the total cost would not exceed £! >50 for stopbanks.
Later the t« >wn clerk read a letter from the Minii -iter of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, who recommended that the council secure the services of a private engine* t. The Department would then also givt t the services of one of its engineers and tlhe whole question could be invet vtigated. After a discussion the c* >uncil adopted this suggestion. Whi in the engineers' report is received a pi ;oposal will be submitte4 to the rate pay era.
