BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, presided, and Councillors Albert Hadfield, G. Hewson, L. R. L. Moller, H. D. Boles, A. J. Jasper, W. B. Darlow, Hector Clark, and C. E. Campbell were also present.
Welcome.—The Mayor welcomed Mr. G. B. Hewson back to the council table after a trip overseas.
Anzac Service.—lt was decided to hold a combined service in the Civic Reserve on the afternoon of Anzac Day, local representatives of the different religious denominations and returned soldiers to be invited to deliver short addresses. The Borough Band and the various choirs will assist in the musical portion of the service.
Girl Guides Offer Service.—Captain Flora Taylor wrote that the Girl Guide company was desirous to be of service to the district, and offered to keep the graves of the pioneers and soldiers in the Birkenhead cemeteries in order. The offer was accepted with expressions of gratification that this duty was to be placed in such capable hands.
Works. —The engineer (Mr. Frank Finch) reported that Pupuke Road had been rolled and repaired; Glenfield Road had been sprayed and top-dre6sed where necessary, and Mokoia Road repaired with bitumen in faulty localities. Marama Terrace, Harbour View Road. Weymouth Street, Palinerston Road, Brassey Road, Rangatua Road, and Kiwi Road had been trimmed with the grader. New Buildings.—Two building permits were granted.
