BIRKENHEAD POST OFFICE.

CENTRAL SITUATION WANTED

HIGHBURY CORNER SUGGESTED

The removal of the Birkenhead Post Office to Highbury was suggested to the Borough Council last evening in a letter from the local Ratepayers and Residents' Association. "The growth of the district has made Highbury the business centre of the borough, and it is felt that this is the position for the Post Office," the letter stated. The association suggested the council should move in the matter of either having the Post Office at Highbury or having a branch office opened there.

The Mayor (Mr. E. G. Skeates) considered it would be unwise for the council to move in the direction of removing the present Post Office. As a resident of Highbury, that might personally suit his convenience, but the views of other people must not be overlooked. He moved that the council ask the Postal Department for a branch Post Office at Highbury.

Mr. H. Clark seconded.

Mr. A. Hadfield considered Highbury the right position for the Post Office, and moved as an amendment, "That the council support the request for the removal of the Post Office to Highbury." Mr. L. R. L. Moller seconded.

The amendment was carried by five votes to four, the division being. For: Messrs. Hadfield, Moller, Hewson, Jasper and Darlow. Against: The Mayor. Messrs. Campbell, Clarke and Boles."
