ABOUT LONDON.

Do you know that—-

Dr. Williams' Library, Gordon Square, was founded in Whitecross Street. Cripplegate, in 1711, primarily for the use of Protestant dissenting ministers 1

Amongst other curiosities preserved here is a manuscript copy of the Bible in eighteen volumes, written with white ink on black paper for a Mr. Harris in 1745, when he had become nearly blind; another manuscript Bible in shorthand, written by a zealous Nonconformist in 1686, when the writer was afraid James 11. would destroy all the Bibles; and the glass bein in which Queen Elizabeth was christened.

Another quaint relic formerly kept here was a mask of Cartouche, the notorious Parisian robber, whose exploits formed the basis of plays and novels innumerable. This, however, has now disappeared; none knows whither.
