The death duties on the estate of the late Earl Haig have produced an unusual situation, which is causing comment in England. After the war the House of Commons voted Earl Haig a gift of £100,000 as a mark of the nation's gratitude. Unless Parliament takes some action, the Exchequer will take back something like a quarter of the country's gift under the present death duty rates.
