SNUFF BOTTLE TREASURES.
TO BE SOLD BT AUCTION.
ART COLLECTION OF AMBASSADOR
Art works collected by the late Baron von Maltzan, former German Ambassador to the United States, will be sold at the American Art Galleries' Exhibition. The collection consists of Chinese porcelains, repouse silverware and bibelots, combined with a collection of snuff bottles, which comprise more than half of the 450 items to be offered.
The snuff bottles are in porcelain, glass and various metals, richly embellished. The second half of the sale comprises lacquers, ivories, bronzes and cloisonne enamels, together with porcelains in blue and white, decorated and monochrome glazes. Among the outstanding pieces is a K'ang-hsi green Lang-van porcelain gallipot, a robin's egg blue vase and a lemon yellow vase of the Ch'len-lung period. Also a Buddhistic sculptured marble "Trinity" and a croup depicting Kuan-yin making an offering. Part of the collection of paintings belonged to the late Meyer Goodfriend Estate, comprising French works chiefly by Francois Cachoud, Albert Lebourg and Elie Pavil. There are 114 convases in the group, among them a Corot. Thirty-eight are by Cachond, of whose work Mr! Goodfriend first gathered a representative collection. Thirty-one are by Pavil and thirteen others by Lebourg.
