WAIHI, Friday

The Borough Council met last evening. The secretary of the conference of the (las Institute, Christchurch, asked support for a remit, that gas undertakings should be allowed to charge for gas supplied through pre-payment meters at 5d per 1000 cubic feet above the net price charged through ordinary meterß. Councillor Morgan: This is the first time the cash customer has been asked to pay more than the credit customer. The remit was rejected.

It was resolved to take friendly proceedings under section 109 of the Public Works Act for a warrant to allow the Ohinemuri County Council to contribute towards the maintenance of the Waihi Beach Road. County ratepayers live along this road. The council decided to offer no objection to the Auckland Education Board's proposal to erect a school building forthwith at Waihi Beach, leaving the legal formalities in connection with the exchange of land to be completed later.

Three months' leave Of absence was granted Councillor Lockington, who intends to visit Australia.

A motion tabled by Councillor Jowsey, that except by a unanimous vote no meetings of the council be held in committee, was ruled out of order, as being contrary to the provisions of municipal law in regard to the majority vote.

The Mayor requested business firms to observe Wednesday next as a holiday on the occasion of the railway opening celebrations at Tauranga.

Miss Maisie Free, a daughter of Mr. W. H. Free, of Waihi, has been appointed an assistant librarian at the Leys Institute, Ponsonby.
