CHRISTCHURCH, this day,
Ihe warehouse of Aitehison, Steans and Co., Ltd., fn Lichfield Street, was gutted by fire last night.
Ill© outbreak was discovered shortly after 10.30 p.m., by which time the flames had obtained a firm hold of the middle of the building. The firemen had a very strenuous battle with the flames before they could get the outbreak under control.
The stock, which comprised fancy goods, highly inflammable, provided ideal fuel for the blaze. Fireworks exploded and added to the din.
No estimate of the damage has yet been given, but it was very considerable. Ihe managing director of the firm stated that the insurances on the stock amounted to approximately £20,000, and on the building to about £5000.
