MELBOURNE, this day.
The 75yds sprint race, the first of three sprint distances to decide the world championship, resulted:— T. Miles (Queensland), 1; T. Banner (Victoria), 2; L. C. Parker (Queensland), 3. Won by eighteen inches in 7 9-16s. W. Darby, of New Zealand, ran second in the fifth heat.
The championship is to be decided over three distances —75yds, 100 yds, 220 yds. Points for each race are: 7 for first,' 4 for second, and 2 for third, the runner with the best aggregate to be declared the sprint champion of the world, a title now held by Tim Banner. Parker was recently the amateur champion of Australia over 100 yds.
