WAIHI POLICE COURT.
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. A disturbance in Devon Street led to the appearance in the Police Court of Thomas Pascoe and Samuel Tanner, who ■"ere charged with fighting in a public place. Tanner alleged that another man, Hariv Ashby, and Pascoe were the aggressors, and that Ashby picked up a piece of pipe. The quarrel originated Over a remark made by Tanner concernlnS Asliby's dray obstructing the road. Ashby alleged that Tanner took the offensive, called him a liar, and rushed him. The magistrate said both defendants were equally to blame, and lined each of them £2. Lily Kennedy, storekeeper at Waihi Beach, was charged with having sold cigarettes on Sunday, January 1. Sergeant Caldwell said defendant provided refreshments to visitors at the beach, but the sale of tobacco on Sunday was illegal. Defendant was convicted.
