MOTORISTS CLEAR A WAY.

TRAPPED IN HUNUA GORGE.

LANDSLIP YESTERDAY.

Trapped by a landslip in the Hunua Gorge yesterday afternoon, fifteen or twenty motorists with parties found that the only course open to them was to organise a rftlief gang and clear away the debris with pick, spade and shovel.

Among those held up were Mr. J. W. Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, and five members of the council, with their wives. Some of the men revelled in the novel conditions and the women found a mild delight in getting into bathing costumes to lend a hand, As this waß the only type of overall available, many of the men followed suit. An ample supply of tools was secured from a quarry a short distance away, and although it was estimated at the outset that the cars would be delayed for over three hours they got through in about an hour from the time of the hold-up. Short work was made of the slip, although a considerable portion of the bank had collapsed on to the roadway.

Prior to the experience in the gorge, the Takapuna party had trouble in getting up the clay road from the flat land in the vicinity of the Hunua Falls, and they had to use ropes and other makeshift devices to climb the steep grade.
