WELCOME RAIN.

IN CITY AND COUNTRY.

LIGHT FALL IN AUCKLAND.

MANY SUBURBS MISSED.

The city and eastern suburbs of Auckland were refreshed at about three o'clock yesterday afternon by a steady fall of rain. It was the first for about a month and residents in those districts which received it counted themselves fortunate. At Heme Bay and further westward there was no rain. In the city proper the fall lasted about half an hour, but eastward of Parnell and New market rain fell steadily for about an .hour.

One unfortunate feature is that the showers passed clear of the city water nupply areas in the Waitakeres and the big dams up there are still as they were. Neither was there rain at Glpn Eden, where the residents depend upon tanks and rainwater. They arc still drawing supplies purchased from the City Council as delivered in the district by motor lorries.

When the rain came at some of the beaches the seaside crowds were sent in search of shelter. It seemed strange that one lot at Takapuna had to do this while at Point Chevalier there was no rain from which to take shelter. However, on those beaches where bathing was temporarily suspended it was promptly resumed once the showers had passed, and with a greater zest than ever.

Among those who appreciate the rain to the fullest are the gardeners. They feel that although limited the supply of moisture will afc least to Bome extent benefit the soil and counteract the effects of the long, dry Bpell.

Those who were patronising the Parnell baths when the rain came revelled in the novelty of theunuguai mixture of fresh and salt water.

The rainfall in Auckland yesterday as recorded by the Government observer at Albert Park was .05 inches.
