STRUCK IN EYE.
BY FLYING PIECE OF GLASS.
MAN'S SERIOUS CONDITION.
While assisting in loading boxes of empty bottles on to a lorry at the Waitemata Hotel on January 2<>, a married man, Mr. Leonard Ernest Varrella, aged 25, who is employed aa a motor driver by the Auckland Bottle Company, was struck in the right eye by a stray piece of glass which flew up. At the time Mr. Varrella thought that he succeeded in getting the glass out and did not gee a doctor. Together with his wife and child he spent the week-end at Islington Bay, RangUoto. On Sunday he became aware that a spect of glass was still in his eye. At times the eye felt all right. Mr. Varrella returned to his home at No 38, Warwick Avenue, Grey Lynn, on Monday evening.
He later consulted a doctor, wlio ordered liitn to the Auckland Hospital, where he was admitted last Thursday. The injury to the eye is reported to be a serious one, and it is not yet known whether the doctor will be able to save the sight or not.
