It is reported in the "Times" that eminent authors, including Mr. George Saintsbury, Mr. Bernard Shaw, Sir Edward Gosse, and Sir Henry Newbolt, have 'written a letter of appeal for funds to endow the Thomas Hardy chair of literature at the University College, Southampton, which will eventually become the Wessex University.
