SHORTAGE OF HIDES.

HIGHER COST OF FOOTWEAR. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, Monday. According to reports from the commercial world there has been a rise in price of hides, and within the next few months it is certain that a corresponding jump will take place in the price of footwear. However, the manager of a local boot shop thinks that the increased value of the finished article® will not amount to more than 10 per cent. He states that the cause of the "bupip up" is a world-wide shortage of hides. It is his candid opinion that this in turn is caused by the enthusiasm with which the dairying industry is being taken up. The modern farmer has no use for dry stock. Producei-s only are wanted, and the majority of bull calves are killed when their hides are practically useless. He said he had noticed that nearly all the beef in Taranaki came from culled cows.
