TALLOW AND HEMP QUIET.
BRISK DEMAND FOR WOOL
WELLINGTON, Monday,
The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram dated January 28, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:—
Tallow. —The market is quiet and prices are lower. Present quotations are: Mutton: Fine, 44/6 to 45/ pef cwt; fair to good, 38/6 to 40/6; dark to dull, 36/ to 37/. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed. 39/6 to 42/; fair to good, 37/6 to 39/6; dark to dull, 35/ to 36/. Mixed: Fair to good, 37/ to 39/; dark to dull, 35/ to 36/. Gut, etc.: 34/ to 36/. Hemp.—The Manila market is quiet. "J" grade, January-March shipments, are quoted at £41 10/, sellers. Sisal: The market is quiet. No. lon the spot is quoted at £37, sellers, and business has been done in distant shipmenffe at £36 15/. No. 2 afloat parcels are offered at £35 10/, but buyers offer £35. Tow, more is offering and buyers quote £29 10/ for first grade, and small business has been done. New Zealand is a little easier. There are sellers of fair at £32 5/, but buyers are holding back. Afloat parcels are offered at £33 and small sales are reported. Values at the close were: Highpoints, £34 10/; fair, I £32; common, £31 10/; second-grade tow, £21; and third grade, £19. Wool.—The sales continue well attended with competition brisk. New Zealand crossbred, greasy, is particularly in request. Values are firmly maintained. Honey.—The bulk market is quiet and prices are more or less nominal. New Zealand, 56/ to 88/ per cwt.; Californian, 35/ to 52/6; Jamaican, 30/ to 50/; Cuban, 37/ to 40/; Australian, 37/6 to 50/; San Domingan, 32/6 to 45/.
