CORNWELL CUP.

THE RE-SAIL DECISION.

BASED ON RULE 3,

Mr. 0. Moller writes: —"Speedwell's" notes in last Friday's issue in reference to the re-sail decision of the Cornwell Cup contest, while possibly making copy, are far from being correct. After quoting the "yachtsman's joke." "For'ard Hand," he states it exactly bears out what he said at the time of the contest. On the contrary. "Speedwell" made the statement that the decision of the Contest Sailing Committee was based on Rule 30, A.Y. and M.B. Association, and he published the rule. This was pointed out to "Speedwell," and it is surprising to find him reiterating this erroneous statement. Again he states Mr. Bewley, the Otago delegate, was never against the sailing committee's decision, but asked to be excused from voting, being an interested party. The committee agreed that all members record their vote, and Mr. Bewley voted quite rightly for a resail. It is the easiest thing possible for "Speedwell" to find "authorities*' in Otago to support him at present, but calm reflection, I feel sure, will bring sounder judgment. "Speedwell" quotes Mr. J. T. Paul, who, unlike "For'ard Hand" has some claim to be classed as an authority, he being chairman of the Otago Association, and I shall be pleased to answer Mr. Paul later. In the meantime, I am content to believe the sailing committee, composed as it was of one delegate from each port, and all men of standing in the yachting world, made a sound and correct, decision in ordering a re-sail in the fifth race, and in this, like "Speedwell," they have many "authorities" to support their decision. "Speedwell" is experienced enough in the sport to know that special champion races have usually special rules. Hence for the purposes of the Boy's New Zealand contest Rule 3 was inserted to provide what the Y.R.A. rules did not.
