ANNIVERSARY REGATTA

The 88th anniversary of the foundation of the Dominion was celebrated yesterday in the time-honoured way by a regatta which attracted very large entries in the sailing division, but the motor fleet were rot so numerous as usual

The morning wa3 fine but overcast with a light air from the west which made the racing very slow work. All classes were grouped about the starting line waiting for their signal to go, but it took some of the boats a long time to get clear of the flagship. Alive with sailing vessels, the Waitemata was a sight that made the heart of all aquatic folk rejoice. The periodic bark of the little gun at the stern of the flagship, noisy raillery between spectators and contestants, and the old familiar gurgle of the keels are all an essential part of the Anniversary Regatta, which caught the popular imagination in the year of its inauguration, 1850, and has held it ever since, despite the claims of other attractions.

With flags bedight, the auxiliary three-masted schooner Ronaki, moored in the stream, directly off the Sheerlegs, made an ideal flagship. Her ample deck amidships was awninged for the comfort of officials and guests of the coaimittee, while Capt. F. Kasper and his crew were most obliging to all.

During the forenoon the flagship was visited by the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. George Baildon), the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr. H. R. Mackenzie), and the chairman of the A.Y. and M.B.A. (Mr. J. B. Johnston) who were received by the chairman, Mr. Endean. Captain, Wells, R.N., of H.M.s. Diomede, and Commanders Atwood, de Selis, Morgan and Bradley boarded the flagship and took the keenest interest in the races, the butterfly effect of white wings in the distance being remarked upon by the naval visitors.

The committee responsible for the regatta this year were as follow: Messrs. W. I'. Endean (chairman), E. B. Webster (vice-chairman), A. M. Gilmour (hon. treasurer), J. C. Hewson (hon. secretary), B. W. Beaumont, A. Burt, Captain Ross, A. Braund, J. Longbottom, W. A. Wilkinson, G. Mobberley, G. Mackenzie, J. Weir, A. R. Hodgson, A. F. Smith, T. McWhirter, H. R. Arthur, J. W. Baillie, T.
