INTERNATIONAL GOLF TROPHY WON BY AUSTRALIA. TEN HOLES TO SIX. (By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Monday. New Zealand to-day lost the IvirkWindeyer Cup to Australia on the Miramar links in ideal weather. Both teams won three matches. On holes being counted it was found Australia had won ten and New Zealand six. Results of the matches were:— Sloan Morpeth and Dr. Koss (New Zealand defeated Dr. Nigel Smith and W. R. Simth, 1 up. W. R. Dobson and Dr. Lee Brown (Australia) defeated T. H. Horton and Donald Grant, 3 up. Dr. Ross defeated Dr. Nigel Smith, 4 up. T. H. Horton defeated W. R. Smith, 1 up. W. R. Dobson defeated Donald Grant, 1 up. Dr. Lee Brown defeated Sloan Morpeth, 6 up. The game beteen Nigel Smith and W. R. Smith and Morpeth and Ross was a keen struggle, the result being in doubt to the last hole. Nigel Smith was hitting a tremendous ball, while W. Smith showed great ability in getting out of troubles well. Morpeth and Ross played steadily, but both showed the effects of strain. Australia won the first hole in 4 to 5, but missed putts by Australia gave New Zealand the third in 5—6. Australia took the next hole in 3 to 4. Morpeth's 12ft Putt. At the eighth Morpeth sank a 12ft putt for a 3. All square. N. Smith outdrove Ross at the ninth by 30vds, and W. Smith nearly holed a 30ft putt, but the hole was halved in 5. At the 11th Morpeth sank a long putt for a 4. New Zealand 1 up. Australia took the 12th in 3 to 4. The next two were halved in fours and Australia became one up at the 15th. Faulty putting by the visitors made all square at the 16th.

The 17th was the most spectacular hole of the match. XV. Smith played a magnificent iron shot from the left side of the fairway but it kicked into the

bunker hole high on the left. N. Smith, with a great explosion shot, placed it 3ft from the pin. but Morpeth sank a 20ft putt for a "birdie" 3, making New Zealand 1 up. The ISth hole was halved in 5, New Zealand winning 1 up. The Australians' card read:— Out: 44534364 5—38. In: 4 5 3 4 4 4 5 5 5—39. The New Zealanders' figures were:— Out: 55444353 5 —38. In: 44444644 5—39 Horton in Form. With the exception of a few holes, sterling golf was played by T. H. Horton and Donald Grant and W. 15. Dobson and Dr. Lee Brown. New Zealand took the first hole in 5 to 7 and the Australians the second in 4 to 5. The fifth was characterised with a great second by Lee Brown, who put his iron shot about a font from the pin, Australia winning the hole in 3 to 5. At the sixth Grant sank a long putt to win in 2. Australia won the next in 4 to o and a ten-foot putt by Lee Brown at the ninth made the Australians turn for home 2 up. Another long putt by Lec Brown at the tenth gave the Australians the hole in 3. Playing a difficult shot. Dobson sank a 20ft putt for a win in 3 at the 11th, givnig the Australians a lead of 4. New Zealand won the next thee holes. Grant got a slightly longer drive at the loth, where Brown sank an Bft putt for a half in 4. Australia won the 16th in 3. the 17th was halved in 4's, and the Australians won the last in 5 to 7, leaving them 3 up. A Close Game. There was a closely-contested game between T. H. Horton and W. li. Smith in the singles. Smith won the second in 4 to 5, and Horton the third in 5 to 6. The next four were halved. Horton was within a few feet of the pin with his second at the eighth, but through missing a putt he lost a chance for a win. and there was a half in 4. Horton met trouble at the ninth, which Smith won in 5 to 6, and turned 1 up.

Smith was weak with a putt from the edge of the green at the 11th, and also stymied himself. Horton winning in 4 to 5. Smith again stymied himself at the 12th, but he pitched over into the cup for a half in 3. A long putt from the edge of the green gave Smith the 13th in 3. Horton squared the game at the 14th by winning the hole in 3 to 4. He won the next in 4 to 5. The 16th was halved in 4 t Smith being unlucky not to win the hole.
