ONEHUNGA BILLIARD SALOONS.

TO CLOSE HOLIDAYS.

COUNTER PETITIONS TO COUNCIL.

A fortnight ago a petition bearing 100 signatures was presented to the Onehunga Borough Council requesting cancellation of a by-law which compels all billiard saloons in the borough to close on Christmas Day and Good Friday. The petition was ordered to lie on the table for a fortnight. In the meantime all the churches in Oneliunga have taken up the matter, and have united in promoting a counter petition that no alteration be made in the by-law. The petition, bearing several hundred signatures, will come before the council to-night, under the charge of Mr. T. Moor. Among other reasons offered in its support is the statement that all business places, including hotels, in Onehunga have to close on Christmas Day and Good Friday, why then should an exception be made in the case of billiard saloons? Also that the action of the council that passed this by-law was afterwards endorsed by their successors in office, who refused to rescind it when petitioned to do so at a later date.
