MT. COOK SNOWFIELDS.

IMPROVED ACCESS EOAD.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

CHRISTCHURCH, this day.

A work which is to be put in hand in a week or so in the Mount Cook region should, when completed, greatly assist in making the snowfields of the cloud piercer more accessible to visitors. The work referred to is the construction of a road, 12ft by 14ft in width, from the Hooker bridge (about two miles from the Hermitage) towards the Ball Hut.

The construction of this road will eliminate the part of thj journey that under present condition;; has to be done on horseback, and which many visitors find somewhat fatiguing. The result will be, the road is finished, that visitors will arrive at the Ball Hut much fresher and in better form to undertake climbing than they do at present.

Mr. F. Langbien, resident engineer, who recently visited the locality, stated ttoat 30 men are going from Timaru to Mount Cook and will make a start with this road. The work ia being provided to relieve the unemployment position, and it is not known how far the road will be constructed bevond the Hooker bridge.
