LOCAL BODIES.
SOME SPECIAL PRIVILEGES.
CHAMBER OF- COMMERCE VIEW.
_ The Auckland Chamber of Commerce views with disfavour some of the privileges enjoyed by local authorities in New Zealand. It had previously been reported to tho council of the chamber that action against local authorities must in general be brought within a very short period—apparently in no case more than six months—of the cause of action having arisen. The matter was referred to the executive for inquiry and report.
At yesterday's meeting of the council the recommendation* of the executive were adopted with a slight amendment. It was decided to represent to the Government that the privileged position of local authorities as regards limitation of time within which actions may be brought against them be modified, and brought into line with private traders; that such anomalies of the local body legislation as those preventing the refund of rates inadvertently twice paid must be removed; and that all local body trading departments be requested to bring down annual accounts prepared in accordance with the principles commonly adopted by privately owned concerns.
