STEAMER STRIKES BAR.

BEACHED FOR. REPAIRS. MISHAP AT PORT WAIKATO. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) MERCER, Monday. The steamer Progress, owned by the Holme Shipping Company, struck the bar while entering Port Waikato on Friday afternoon. The temporary ground caused the ship to strain some rivets, and she began to leak. However, the Roose Shipping Company's steamer Rawhiti, came to her assistance. In response to a telephone message a special pump was obtained from Mercer by speed-launch, and was operated by the Rawhiti. The discharge of the cargo which totalled 300 tons, into the Rawhiti, was continued throughout the day and night. The Progress was beached at Port Waikato yesterday and repairs effected, enabling her to leave to-day for Wellington. The Progress trades regularly to Port Waikato from southern ports.
