"ABSURD DEMANDS."
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. BOARD MEMBER INDIGNANT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Strong criticism or the Education Department's methods in regard to certain local affairs, was made by Mr. R. Wild, a West Coast member, at the Education Board meeting, and it was followed by an attack on the central control policy. Mr. Wild said the boards had accepted too long the absurd demands of the Department, and there was an utter lack of co-operation. The great curse of the country was the multiplicity of Civil Servants. "The sooner we do something in the way of asserting our position the better," he said. "We should see if the regulations are legal, and discover how much of the authority vested in us by the legislature has been cribbed, illegally." A committee was set up to consider the powers of the board.
