J Mainari Reaches London BaiHy { Damaged. I I DISASTER NARROWLY AVERTED I (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON", September 23. The steamer Mainari, which struck an iceberg while en route from Wellington to London and put into Bahia Blanca, for repairs, has arrived in London. With her bows crumpled and bent, the Mamari shows distinct marks of her collision with the iceberg. Huge gaps which were made below the waterline have been patched up with baulks of timber. Bands of steel, which the Mamari had on her bulkhead, are held to have averted disaster. The seamen say that the iceberg was not seen until it loomed up nearly 300 feet high. The iceberg was as black as , night and the Mamari struck it head on, toppling it over. The Mamari, a cargo steamer of 8100
tons, is owned by the Shaw, aavm and I Albion Company. After a delay of about a fortnight, undergoing repairs at Bahia, she waa reported as having left there on August 30 for London.
